Meet The Founder

Tara Thompson, MA, MBA, MSN, DNP, PMHNP-BC

Hi guys, my name is Dr. Tara Thompson, and I am a Psychiatric Nurse practitioner. Interesting story….I actually began my career as a therapist after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Eastern University. After working in behavioral health for several years I decided to pursue a career in nursing (as if I wasn’t challenged enough) and earned additional undergraduate degrees in Nursing from Gwynedd Mercy University and Drexel University, then a Master of Science Degree in Nursing and later a Doctor of Nursing Practicing from Drexel University (please don’t tell the student loan people where to find me!)

Throughout this (very expensive) journey, I have learned that people are multi-faceted and understanding their lives and experiences requires me to look at treatment from multiple perspectives including psychological, biological, developmental, and culturally. I have grown to know that the best medication management service in Newark Delaware can be affordable at Mind Help, helping me to support those in needs. Listen, living in today’s world isn’t easy, which is why I believe in nurturing the capacity for resilience and growth to cope with stress and adversity. What that looks like, we can decide together!

How do I know if I actually need medication or just therapy?

Current research has shown that, in many cases, a combination of psychotropic medications and psychotherapy gives patients the best result. The best medication management service in Newark Delaware can help alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety more quickly, thus giving you a chance to improve your symptoms while undergoing psychotherapy at the same time which gives you the tools to cope if symptoms arise again. Listen, medication is tool, and when it comes to our mental health, I believe we need to use every tool in our tool box. Either way we will work together to figure what will benefit you the most.

Global Questions

Psychiatry helps give an individual the power to make major changes in their life, and to help target the exact issues relating to their mental or behavioral health challenges. For patients struggling with a variety of mental health concerns, psychiatry can help by assessing your mental health and developing a unique treatment plan.
Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) are responsible for assessing the mental health status of patients by studying their relevant medical history, performing comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, and identifying risk factors that might affect a patient’s mental health. They make diagnoses of their patients’ mental illness based on their assessment, and then determine what will be the most effective plan of care. By utilizing their knowledge of psychotherapy modalities and psychopharmacology, and in collaboration with doctors and other professionals, they put their patients on a regimen of therapy and prescription medication to improve their mental health.
Telemedicine is the process of providing health care from a distance through technology, often using videoconferencing. Telepsychiatry, a subset of telemedicine, involving a range of services including psychiatric evaluations, patient education and medication management. Psychiatrists and Nurse Practitioners need to be licensed in the state(s) where the patient they are working with is located. State licensing boards and legislatures view the location of the patient as the place where “the practice of medicine” occurs. Although telepsychiatry has the disadvantage of the patient and psychiatrist not being in the same room, it can create enhanced feelings of safety, security and privacy for many patients.
You can expect that you will asked the reason you’re coming in (to the virtual office) to see me. Being asked open-ended questions might make you nervous, especially if you don’t know where to begin or how to start. Just know that there’s truly no wrong way to answer and I will guide you through the interview. If, however, you want to come prepared, be sure to communicate what you’ve been experiencing and also, if you feel comfortable, share the goals you’d like to achieve from being in treatment.
While I am also a trained psychotherapist, I no longer solely conduct therapy visits. I see you guys for psychiatric evaluations and medication management. I’m sorry guys but I wish I had enough availability to do it all. I do however weave some therapeutic time into our appointment as time permits.
